Option D - If John crossed the river first he would be alone on the other side.
Option E - If John crossed the river second, it means he was alone when Mrs. Smith was crossing.

When john is traveling in 2nd position, He is never alone. Because there are three persons, Only one has(either mr. or Mrs smith) crossed the river and one person is still behind john. In boat also he is with jonas.
