You can't keep that part, because that part is ungrammatical in combination with the non-underlined part of the sentence.
This "it" is trying to stand for the army of life-size warrior statues—which is already the subject of the sentence (and therefore the subject of both parallel parts).
In other words, with this "it" left in place, you have a sentence that
