Sentence Correction (SC) | Re: Sydney Smith, was an incorrigible optimist, and retained

This is not a GMAT type question and I wouldn't expect GMAT to test us on such a fine detail.
But if I had to give my preference, I would prefer (C) because it better justifies the use of 'retained.'

Smith retained his good humour even ...
