There is confusion between A, C and E.
A) between passing

'interval between' should be followed by two things or plural nouns.
eg no between x and y, or space between pillars, etc.

But here there is only one thing: passing close to earth

I guess it could have been correct if 'passing close to earth' was replaced with ' its passes close to earth'

(C) between its passes

This corrects the error in above. >>> Correct answer is C

(E) as it passes
