Geologists believe that the extinction was caused by the impact of a large asteroid, which resulted in the creation of the Araguainha crater in what is now Brazil. The predominant theory holds that the impact site was atypical in that it was composed largely of shale in which oil existed in high concentrations, and that the energy of the Impact was sufficient to Ignite the oil, releasing into the atmosphere millions of tons of greenhouses gases, which catalyzed increases in temperatures, rendering Earth uninhabitable for many species.

Which of the following, If true, would point to a possible flaw in the predominant theory for the Permian-Triassic Extinction?
