(1) 2 is a root of the equation x^2 + 5x + k = 0.
2^2 + 5(2) + k = 0
4 + 10 + k = 0
k = -14

(2) (x+7) is a factor of the equation x^2 + 5x + k = 0.
When x = -7, the equation becomes:
(-7)^2 + 5(-7) + k = 0
49 - 35 + k = 0
k = -14

Both statements (1) and (2) lead to the same conclusion: k = -14.
