x = 2^18*5^17 = 2*10^17

Number of digits = 17 +1 = 18

I'm confused.

How does multiplying by 2 add another digit?

For example, 10,000 * 2 = 20,000. There are 5 digits before and after in this example.

Can you please help explain?
