Rather, the author has just pointed out a pattern and has not presented a conclusion regarding the nature of that pattern. It could be a cause-effect relationship, but it could also be that a large number of unsold houses is associated with a future recession in a different way, perhaps simply as an indicator of economic issues that will lead to arecession.
