See...The sentence has two clauses as I mentioned in my previous post. Every clause must have a subject-verb pair.
In clause 1: The subject is 'Athletics' which is singular in the context of this sentence and hence take the singular verb form 'is' in option E.
Clause 2 is connected with clause 1 with'that ' which usually plays two roles in a sentence:
