Look above at what you said. I bolded two parts of it.
Notice that those two parts are not the same.
Yes, for the argument to work, "temperature shifts between arctic and temperate climates" must be "possible."
On the other hand, the argument still works even if they are not "common."
After all, we need such a shift to have occurred just once, not commonly, for the conclusion to be correct.
