In order to conclude that "the entire flute must surely have had more holes," we need evidence directly pertaining to the missingpieces of that flute. However, the passage provides no such evidence.
The existence of four holes is notevidence of three more holes. What if the diatonic scale only had four notes at this point in history? What if this particular bone flute was intentionally created with a partial diatonic scale, not the entire scale?
