Notice that choice (A) does NOT say that the first IS support. Rather, (A) says that the first is EVIDENCE that has been taken as supporting aconclusion -- specifically, the conclusion that the worrisome rumors must be false.
The second half of (A) does not suggest that we are questioning the evidence itself. Instead, it suggests that we are questioning whether that evidence does in fact support the conclusion (that the worrisome rumors must be false). The second BF describes why that evidence -- even if it's true -- might not support that conclusion, so (A) works.
