Speaking as a GMAT tutor who specializes in Verbal, the best questions are exactly the ones you're asking. Tutoring is an expensive proposition, so asking a tutor why they're not only a good choice, but a better choice than the millions of alternatives out there is always a smart move. Tying into your last question, you should ask the tutor how they know when they're doing a good job. The ability to self correct is vital.
