GMAT Sentence Correction doesn't test this issue and doesn't test commas in general (with one small exception that isn't related to your example). Commas can occasionally give you a clue to where there's another grammar error, but a comma will never make the difference between a right and wrong answer on the GMAT, except possibly when dealing with essential/inessential modifiers.
