Why not 'D' ?
This exercises seems a lot with these two:
"around-1900-fishermen-in-the-chesapeake"
and
"less than 35 years after the release of African honeybees"
The verb evolve could be used in the past perfect as it references something that happened over time but ended in the past when the inventions were materialized. Please someone helps me identifying why this case is different from the others above.
