GMAT Data Sufficiency (DS) | Re: How long will it take for two pipes A and B to fill an empty cistern

Obviously, individually none of the two statements help us to get the answer, since 1st statement talks only about pipe A while second statement talks only about pipe B.

Combining the two statements: Pipe A takes 40 hours. Pipe B is 1/3 as efficient, so pipe B will take thrice the time, hence Pipe B takes 120 hours.

LCM of 40, 120 = 120. Let total capacity of cistern be 120 units.
Thus, pipe A fills = 120/40 = 3 units per hour
and pipe B fills = 120/120 = 1 unit per hour
