We can let Juliet’s current age = J and Will’s current age = W.

Since five years ago Juliet was three times as old as Will:

J - 5 = 3(W - 5)

J - 5 = 3W - 15

J = 3W - 10

Since Juliet is currently twice as old as Will:

J = 2W

We can substitute 2W for J in our first equation and we have:

2W = 3W - 10

10 = W
