GMAT Problem Solving (PS) | Re: Which of the following must be true?

could one of you kindly elaborate - I'm 100% confused. I didn't get how the AB = whatever was relevant so I just presumed M=3 and N=2 and then tested the options. This gave me that only option 5 was correct. My method obviously sucks though, please help :D
