Whoever and whomever can be judged using the he/him rule.
Whoever when it is the subject and whomever when it is the object in that clause.

Rephrasing the sentence: you should strive to emulate he/him or they/them
What goes well here? He or him? They or them?
Him and them are correct and hence whomever is the right choice.
