(C) is wrong because of the use of the word 'have'. This changes the meaning of the sentence. (E) states: Would [go on to] publish; whereas (C) states: Would have [gone on to] publish. This changes the meaning and makes it sound like the author didn't publish his books during his life because of some reason.
