On a revision, here is a quickie.

We know that the first if does not suit the context since there is no condition involved. The second 'if' is ok. Therefore we can safely remove all choices containing the first 'if', namely A, B and E. C can be dumped for using the untouchable modifier 'being'

Doesn't D remain by choice rather than by chance?
