We know that the average of 5 numbers = 36, so (a + b + c + d + e)/5 = 36 and we also know that the average of 4 of the numbers is 34, so (a + b + c + d)/4 = 34. We can solve for (a + b + c +d) = 136 using the second equation. We can then substitute (a + b + c + d) into the first equation and solve for e. (136+e)/5=36 => 136+e=180 and therefore e=44.
