Don't have a dog yet, but my wife and I have looked into one very seriously so I've done my homework. We've also got chinchillas which are pretty needy, and cats. We like our animals in this family.....
Anyway, the only two issues I could see you having with the pup are global treks that require boarding for a few days/weeks and your summer internship, or if it is a "lock jaw" breed (pit, rottie, boxers, etc) which have a stigma to them.
These breeds are not allowed in a lot of apartments
