In my opinion both D and E are wrong. One standrad practice in GMAT is NOT to use the same pronoun in a sentence to refer to two different antecedents:
In
"....companies with a brand-orientated approach achieved twice as much return ontheir equity..."
and
"...as those that placedtheir focus elsewhere..."
the pronoun "their" refers to two diferent sets
