I think there are two splits here. One is about the verb and the second is on “it” vs market place.
A is out because it could refer to software giant or explanation. But it should refer to operating system.
B is not parallel. Failing to thrive or gain a foothold
OS cannot fail to try and thrive. D is out.
Failed attempt or gain not parallel. C out
Failure or gain parallel. And also solves the problem of it. Answer E
