I struggled with this question and selected the wrong answer (C). After some research, I believe it comes to understanding the subtle difference in interpretation of "could" and "were able". Given that others were hoping for their survival, I can infer there was time for the astronautsto try to escape before the explosion, which tells me theywere able , butcould not make it out in time.
