A subtle carefulness is required to find out the antecedent of a pronoun. i.e A pronoun can replace a noun and this noun can be the subject or object of the sentence. But a pronoun can't substitute a noun that is the object of a preposition.
Here you can clearly rule out that ****convention is not the antecedent of the pronoun "it" as ***convention is the object
