Here I strongly think ans given by aj0809 quoting egmat is wrong . "the great navigators who first sailed around the Earth gathering information about its size and the curvature of its surface, astronomers have made new observations " . Here it is a participial phrase modifies entire clause or verb . But not just noun modifier.

Still somebody can enlighten further on this .
