Here's my take on this question, but before that couple of important concepts.
Rather than/instead of --> Correct Idiom is 'X' rather than/instead of 'Y', So each can be used.
Having been is used to describe an event that happened in the past, but If we are given a time frame then that event may continue till present. Ex- Having been a smoker for past 10 year....Josh
